Mexico: 5.5-magnitude earthquake hits off coast of Chiapas April 23

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake off the coast of southern Chiapas state near the Guatemalan border on Thursday, April 23. According to initial reports, the quake struck at 18:30 (local time) approximately 131 km (81 mi) southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo. There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant material damage, and no tsunami warnings were immediately issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.
