Vietnam: Heavy storms and hail kill at least five people in northern provinces April 24

Heavy storms and hail in northern Vietnam kill five people and injure 20 others on April 24; further adverse weather expected

Heavy storms and hail struck northern Vietnam on Friday, April 24, killing at least five people. One person remains missing while at least 20 others are injured. The fatalities were reported in the provinces of Ha Giang, Son La, Yen Bai, and Lai Chau. According to reports, the worst affected provinces are in Ha Giang and Yen Bai. Almost 5900 houses across the region have been damaged, while more than 1575 hectares (3892 acres) of farm crops were destroyed. Rescue personnel have been deployed to provide assistance and authorities warned that downpours are likely to continue in the northern provinces through Sunday, April 26.

Individuals in northern Vietnam are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of water is enough to knock over an adult.
