Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador issued a decree on Tuesday, May 12, securing the extension of a policy that orders the armed forces to support public security and policing until March 2024. According to the decree, the national guard, a military police introduced by the president, will command and regulate the work of the armed forces with the aim of curbing violent crime. Reports suggest that violence has recently risen in the country, with a total of 3000 homicides recorded in March 2020, the second-highest monthly homicide rate ever recorded in Mexico.
