Family members of COVID-19 patients at a Mexico State hospital gather in protest on May 1-2; heightened security presence reported

Warning

Event

On Friday, May 1, family members of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients gathered at the Hospital las Americas in Ecatepec (Mexico State) to protest the lack of information disclosed about admitted patients. Images emerged through social media channels days prior showing mismanaged cadavers at the hospital, prompting the protest. Several surrounding roads were closed on Saturday, May 2, when additional family members gathered to demand more information.

A heightened security presence was reported at the hospital as individuals forced entry into the hospital. Associated protests cannot be ruled out in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Ecatepec are advised to monitor the situation and expect a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions should additional protests take place.
