Libya: GNA claims control of Tripoli's international airport June 3

Event

Forces affiliated with the Government of National Accord (GNA) claimed on Wednesday, June 3, to have seized control of Tripoli International Airport (TIP) following intense fighting. Clashes between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and GNA forces have been taking place for the past few days in the Qasr bin Ghashir area until GNA forces reportedly performed a successful ambush on Wednesday. With supply routes seriously compromised due to the loss of the airport, the LNA's remaining positions in Tripoli are now more vulnerable and LNA troops may be forced to withdraw southwards.

Further clashes between LNA and GNA forces in the area are possible over the near term.

Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
