Mexico: Tropical Storm Cristobal moving slowly across Bay of Campeche June 2

Event

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that a threat of heavy rain and life-threatening flooding continues around the Bay of Campeche on Tuesday, June 2, due to Tropical Storm Cristobal moving slowly across the bay. The NHC has issued a Tropical Storm Warning from Campeche (Campeche state) to Puerto de Veracruz (Veracruz state). The storm is forecast to track across the south of the Bay of Campeche, moving briefly inland on Wednesday night, June 3, before heading north into the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, June 5. The storm is currently carrying winds of up to 65 kph (40 mph) but may weaken slightly as it makes landfall, before picking up strength as it heads back out to sea. Rainfall of up to 64 cm (25 in) is expected in parts of Tabasco, Veracruz, and Campeche states, and up to 38 cm (15 in) in northern Chiapas, Quintana Roo and Yucatan states. The rainfall may cause flash floods and landslides in some areas.

Strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions to transport and business operations are possible in coastal areas off the Bay of Campeche in the coming days.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, plan alternate routes, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
