Sudan: Alleged mercenaries bound for Libya detained in West Darfur state June 28

Event

Sudanese security forces detained at least 122 alleged mercenaries in West Darfur state on Sunday, June 28, who were believed to be bound for Libya to fight there. A spokesperson for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces stated that among those arrested were 72 members of the Sudanese Awakening Revolutionary Council armed group. It is currently unclear which faction within Libya the detainees intended to fight for. The detained members of the Sudanese Awakening Revolutionary Council face charges which include attacking a military facility and the recruitment of children for the purposes of violence. The remaining detainees were transferred to police custody.

Context

The UN has stated that armed groups from Darfur have been found to be fighting in Libya for both the internationally-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA). In February, Sudanese security forces reportedly detained over 240 people who were intending to fight in Libya.
