Bangladesh: Three-day holiday announced for Eid al-Adha from July 31 to August 2

Bangladeshi authorities have announced a three-day public holiday for Eid al-Adha that will begin Friday, July 31, and last through Sunday, August 2. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recommended imposing travel restrictions on travel from four districts, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, and Chattogram, to other areas during the holiday. In addition, they have called on citizens to respect measures currently in place to curb the further spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), such as the mandatory use of face masks in public spaces.

Context

Eid al-Adha is one of the most widely observed holidays in Islam and coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. According to Islamic customs, worshippers usually slaughter a sheep or goat to share the meat with their family and neighbors.
