Libya: Airstrikes target Watiya airbase (Nuqat al Khams district) July 4
Airstrikes targets GNA-occupied Watiya airbase (Nuqat al Khams district) on July 4; further airstrikes possible
Event
Airstrikes targeted the Government of National Accord (GNA)-occupied Watiya airbase (Nuqat al Khams district) overnight (local time) on Saturday, July 4. The Libyan National Army (LNA) stated were unaware of the identity of the aircraft. It is currently unclear if any injuries or fatalities resulted from the strike. Turkish sources have stated that Turkey had consulted the GNA on the potential establishment of military bases within Libya, one of which would be located at Watiya.
Further airstrikes are possible in the area in the near term.
Context
Watiya was captured by the GNA in May following a series of counterattacks against the LNA commenced in March dubbed 'Operation Peace Storm'. Both sides of the conflict have attempted to secure foreign reinforcements following the GNA advance towards Sirte, where a clash over control of the city is expected to occur.
Advice
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
