Libya: GNA forces mobilize near Sirte July 18

Additional GNA forces mobilize near Sirte on July 18; monitor the situation

Warning

Event

The Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) moved some of its forces closer to Sirte on Saturday, July 18. Reports indicate that hundreds of military vehicles moved from Misrata towards Tawergha, on the approach to Sirte.

Clashes in the vicinity of Sirte are possible over the medium term.

Context

Khalifa Haftar's eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) and the GNA have both bolstered their forces around Sirte in recent weeks. Sirte serves as an important gateway to several key oil ports in Libya.

Advice

Those in Sirte are advised to avoid the affected areas in the near term due to the risk of armed clashes, monitor developments, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
