Libya: Militias ordered to leave civilian locations in Tripoli on July 15

On Wednesday, July 15, local media reported that the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) had ordered several militia groups to leave 12 civilian locations in the Tripoli neighborhoods of Al-Hadba, Salah al-Din, Sidra Road, and Al-Shawk Road. The militias had made their headquarters in these locations, and the GNA is attempting to reestablish the rule of law in them and to permit recognized security forces to carry out their duties. The Joint Operations Room, a force established by the GNA to maintain security, reportedly issued a 48-hour deadline on Tuesday, July 14, warning that action may be taken against the militias should they fail to comply with the order to evacuate.

A realistic possibility of armed clashes exists should the militias ignore the evacuation order. A heightened security presence is to be expected in the affected areas in the near term.
