Niger: Suspected militants kill five civilians in Gueskérou (Diffa region) July 1

Event

Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked the village of Ngaroua-Gana in the commune of Gueskérou (Diffa region) on Wednesday night, July 1, killing at least five civilians and wounding four others. The gunmen also allegedly kidnapped at least one person from the village.

Similar militant attacks are possible in the Diffa region over the near term.

Context

The Diffa region has seen an increase in attacks linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWA) in recent months, including a major assault on a military camp outside Diffa on May 3. Security has since been increased in the region, but further attacks remain likely in the medium term.
