IED attack targets US logistical convoy near Kuwait border crossing on August 10; further attacks possible

Warning

Event

A US logistical convoy was reportedly hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Monday, August 10, near the southern border with Kuwait. However, it is currently unclear whether there were any casualties from the attack near the Jraischan border crossing at around 21:00 (local time). An Iraqi Shi'ite militia group, Ashab al-Khaf, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, both Kuwaiti and Iraqi authorities have also denied that the attack occurred, whilst US sources have declined to comment on the incident.

The incident follows a similar attack on a US logistical convoy near Nasiriyah on Sunday. Similar attacks targeting US facilities and interests are possible in Iraq over the near term.

Advice

Those in the area are advised to monitor developments and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
