Security forces used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse protesters in Basra on Sunday, August 16. The demonstrators had gathered outside the governor's residence in the Manawi Al-Basha area to condemn the assassination of a civil activist which occurred on Friday, August 14. No information has been confirmed as to any casualty figures following the use of heavy-handed dispersal techniques, although it has been reported that a journalist and a cameraman were arrested during the unrest.
