LNA carry out airstrikes targeting GNA positions near Sirte on August 12; further clashes likely

Warning

Event

The Libyan National Army (LNA) has reportedly targeted a convoy of Government of National Accord (GNA) forces near Sirte on Wednesday, August 12. Local sources report that troops were attempting to enter Sirte from the west, via the Wadi Bey area, before coming under fire. No details regarding casualties have been released, and no comment has been made from GNA spokespeople.

Further clashes are to be expected between LNA and GNA forces in the vicinity of Sirte in the near term.

Context

Khalifa Haftar's eastern-based LNA and the GNA have both bolstered their forces around Sirte in recent weeks. Sirte serves as an important gateway to several key oil ports in Libya.

Advice

Those in Sirte are advised to avoid the affected areas in the near term due to the risk of armed clashes, monitor developments, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
