Sudan: Armed men attack village in South Darfur on July 31

Event

On Friday, July 31, a group of unidentified armed men attacked the village of Oringa, in Sudan's South Darfur state, south of Nyala. The village was reportedly set on fire and the men opened fire on the residents, although the number of casualties remains unclear. The leader of the group allegedly came to the village on Tuesday, July 28, to demand the departure of the inhabitants. The villagers responded by calling the police, who arrested the leader and imprisoned him in the Kass district.

The incident comes following an attack in the district of Masteri (West Darfur) on Saturday, July 25, where 500 armed men reportedly killed more than 60 people. The Sudanese prime minister has pledged the deployment of additional troops to Darfur in an attempt to limit further attacks.

Further attacks and a heightened security presence are possible in Darfur in the near term.
