Bahrain: Protesters to gather nationwide September 18 /update 1

Event

A number of opposition groups have called for gatherings across the country on Friday, September 18, as part of a "Day of Rage" against the normalization of relations between Bahrain and Israel. It is currently unclear where these protests will occur; however, they are likely to take place in Shi'a areas outside of central Manama. A number of unauthorized protests may also take place in the run-up to and after September 18.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites, along with disruptions to overland travel. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Further protests over the issue are likely over the near term.

Context

Signed in Washington D.C. on September 15, the Abraham Accords normalized relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the UAE. The agreement has been broadly backed by the Bahraini government; however, it has provoked opposition among the populace, particularly among Shi'a opposition groups, including the Al Wefaq Society and the February 14 Youth Coalition.
