Transport union GPTP) to hold nationwide 24-hour strike September 21; confirm overland itineraries
Event
The Heavy Transport Drivers' Union (GPTP) has announced that they will stage a nationwide 24-hour strike on Monday, September 21. The union has called for the strike to protest perceived corruption and the unfair levying of fines. The largest of the gatherings will be in Guatemala City where drivers plan to disrupt the flow of traffic, although other areas including El Progresso and El Rancho are expected to be impacted, especially along the CA-9 Highway.
Disruptions to transport services are possible across Guatemala on September 21. Additional disruptions to travel and business are also possible as a result of protests. Due to current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions on public gatherings, the police may attempt to disperse protests that contravene these rules.
Advice
Individuals in Guatemala are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, monitor developments, anticipate transportation and business disruptions near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Those planning on utilizing alternative overland transportation methods during the strike period should also be aware of a surge in demand for these services.
