Unionists and other activists to hold protests in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula (Cortes department) on September 15; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution
Event
Members of several public sector labor unions plan to gather for a march from Morazan Boulevard to Parque Central in Tegucigalpa on Tuesday, September 15. Participants will gather at 06:00 (local time) to protest against the economic policies of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and his government, as well as other labor-related grievances.
A separate protest will be held by union members and other activists in San Pedro Sula (Cortes department) on Tuesday. Participants will gather at 08:00 to march from the Mega Mall in the east of the city to Parque Central. They are gathering to demand government accountability and transparency in the government's handling of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Both marches are likely to be well attended and a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are expected in the vicinity of the demonstrations.
Advice
Those in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings, anticipate disruptions to transportation and services in areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
