Warning

Event

Members of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKVA) blocked several main arterial routes into Durban (KwaZulu-Natal province) on Friday morning, September 25, as part of a protest over perceived government corruption and to demand an end to widespread poverty. MKVA members blocked the N3 highway near Tollgate Bridge in the Berea area and other main roads into the city, before heading towards the Central Business District (CBD), where they plan to protest outside the African National Congress' (ANC) office. Durban Metropolitan Police have reportedly been working to reopen roads are closely monitoring the demonstrations.

Further disruptions to transport are possible throughout the day and a heightened security presence is expected in the area as the demonstrations continue. Further associated protests are possible in Durban and other areas over the near term.

Advice

Those in Durban are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, plan alternative routes if traveling, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Travelers encountering a protest or roadblock should never attempt to drive through it, as such actions may provoke a violent response from demonstrators, including attacks on vehicles.
