Libya: Armed clashes continue near Tripoli’s 7 April Camp October 2 /update 1

Armed groups continue to clash near Tripoli’s 7 April Camp on October 2; further clashes possible

Warning

Event

Heavy weapon use has been reported on Friday evening, October 3, as part of a continuation of clashes near Tripoli's Jibs Gate and 7 April Camp areas along Gharyan Road. The clashes reportedly involve General Security forces from Zintani and Saraya Al-Zawiyah forces from Zawiya. Earlier on Friday, the Joint Force claimed to have intervened to resolve the clashes and pledged to arrest those responsible. Fighting was initially triggered following a shooting in front of the 7 April Camp. There have been no immediate reports of casualties in the clashes.

In addition, there has been heavy small arms fire reported from the Janzour area of Tripoli. It is unclear what the cause is; however, it is in a similar area to firing that was reported on Thursday, October 1, which was in celebration of the release of three prisoners of war from 404 Battalion.

Tensions remain in the area and further confrontations are possible.

Advice

Those in Tripoli are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
