Libya: Demonstrators gather in Sabha October 16 to denounce living conditions

Tens of demonstrators gather in Sabha to denounce living conditions on October 16; avoid all protests as a precaution

Informational

Event

Tens of demonstrators gathered in the southwestern city of Sabha on Friday, October 16, to denounce living conditions. Among their grievances include fuel shortages in the south of the country, and a rise in black market activities adding to worsening living conditions. Demonstrators were also protesting the state of Sabha Airport (SEB), where, on September 30, a plane carrying civilians and goods was prevented from landing despite SEB having allegedly reopened days prior, before then being ordered to suspend flights once again. The demonstration passed off peacefully.

A heightened security presence and localized travel disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of any protest.

Advice

Those in Sabha are advised to monitor developments, avoid large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
