Opposition party to demonstrate in Colombo on October 5; avoid protest as a precaution
Event
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party is scheduled to protest in Colombo on Monday, October 5, to denounce a controversial constitutional amendment. Participants will reportedly gather outside of Colombo's Fort railway station at 15:00 (local time), to protest against the proposed twentieth constitutional amendment bill which will reportedly grant extraordinary powers to the head of state, overturning an amendment passed by the previous administration.
A heightened security presence and localized travel disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of the event. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, with further associated protests likely.
