Demonstrators to gather nationwide on November 28 to protest 2021 budget; avoid protests as a precaution
Event
Demonstrators are set to gather nationwide on Saturday, November 28, to protest over the 2021 budget and other political grievances. The government suspended the proposed budget on Monday, November 23, and has until Monday, November 30, to announce a new plan. Demonstrators will reportedly gather at 14:00 (local time) at main squares, parks, and government buildings across the country to demand political reforms and the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei. Exact locations have not been announced; however, recent related gatherings on November 21 saw thousands gather in Guatemala City. Hundreds broke into the Congress building during the protest, setting fire to parts of it. Security forces responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the protesters, with reports indicating that some protesters were injured as a result.
A heightened security presence and associated disruption to transportation and business are to be expected in the vicinity of protest sites.
Advice
Those in Guatemala are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
