South Africa: Demonstrators to gather in Johannesburg November 11
ANC members plan to gather in Johannesburg on November 11; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution
Event
A demonstration has been planned on Wednesday, November 11, at the African National Congress headquarters, Luthuli House, in Johannesburg by members of the African National Congress (ANC) Free State branch over alleged corruption claims against officials. Participants are demanding that ANC secretary general, Ace Magashule, immediately steps down. South African prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Magashule on Monday, November 9, amid a corruption scandal involving a R255-million (USD 16 million) asbestos audit contract in the Free State. The time of the demonstration has not been confirmed.
Similar demonstrations have been well-attended and a heightened security presence is to be expected, with disruptions to transportation and business likely. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Those in Johannesburg are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution
