Sri Lanka: Weather warnings for northern Sri Lanka as Tropical Cyclone Nivar makes landfall in India November 26

Event

The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology has issued red alerts (the highest in a four-tier scale) for Northern and North-Central provinces as Tropical Cyclone Nivar made landfall in India's Tamil Nadu state on Thursday, November 26. The Department warned that winds of between 50-60kph (31-37mph) are to be expected in these provinces. Strong gusty winds of between 40-50kph (25-31mph) have been predicted in other parts of the country. It had previously warned that heavy rains would affect northern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, November 24, and Wednesday, November 25, with downpours reaching 150mm (6in) in some areas.

Associated disruptions to transport, business, and utilities are possible over the near term as the storm system passes.

Context

Powerful storm systems can affect the country mostly between April and December. Most cyclones approach from the eastern coast and cross through the central and northern provinces. Other trajectories, however, have been recorded. The impact of these storm systems varies depending on their intensity, although in general they have the potential to wreak havoc in affected areas.
