Vietnam: Coastal provinces prepare for arrival of Tropical Storm Atsani November 6

Event

Vietnamese authorities announced on Friday, November 6, for coastal provinces to prepare for the arrival of Tropical Storm Atsani, forecast to make landfall in the central area of the country between Sunday and Monday, November 8 and 9. The Central Steering Committee on Disaster Prevention and Control has asked local authorities from Quang Ninh to Phu Yen to brace for effects from the storm. As of 15:45 (UTC) on November 6, Atsani is directly south of Taiwan, with maximum sustained winds of 52mph (84kph) moving northwest at 9mph (14.5kph) with a turn to the west-southwest expected over the next 12 hours.  

Coastal areas are expected to receive a moderate storm surge and large waves. Flooding and landslides are expected during the storm's passing. 

Context

Tropical depressions, storms, and typhoons are common from June to October, posing a considerable threat to human populations and infrastructure. The impact varies depending on the intensity of the storm system, as well as the topographical orientation of the affected area(s) and the observance of existing disaster preparedness programs.

Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
