Belgium: Anti-government activists to protest in central Brussels Dec. 13

Activists to protest at Mont des Arts, Brussels, Belgium, from 1300 Dec. 13 to denounce government policy; localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists are planning to protest in central Brussels Dec. 13 to denounce public sector austerity measures, among other issues. Participants will meet at 1300 at Mont des Arts, near Brussels Central railway station.

Attendance could reach the low hundreds. Police will deploy to monitor the protest. The presence of large numbers of people and associated security measures could prompt localized transport disruptions, and police could attempt to disperse the gathering if it is deemed to breach coronavirus disease (COVID-19) social-distancing mandates. Congestion is possible on train services to and from Brussels Central Station. Although the demonstration is likely to pass without incident, isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a routine security precaution and to mitigate potential disruption. Allow additional time for travel via Brussels Central station the afternoon of Dec. 13. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
