Guatemala: Roadblocks and strike planned in Totonicapan Department on Dec. 9
Indigenous organizations to build roadblocks, hold a regional strike in the Totonicapan Department, Guatemala, on Dec. 9.
Event
Indigenous activists, members of the umbrella organization "48 Cantons of Totonicapan," plan to build roadblocks and hold a strike in the Totonicapan Department on Dec. 9. The purpose of the action is to protest the policies of Guatemala's president and Congress. Activists intend to build roadblocks in at least five sites in the department between 0600-1700:
Downtown Totonicapan
Route to Panquix
La Pistola
Cuatro Caminos
Chuipatan
Most of the roadblocks will be along the Pan-American Highway, the country's main route, connecting Totonicapan, and other western departments, with the capital Guatemala City. Activists have also called workers and business owners in the department to close their businesses during the protest hours.
Significant transport disruptions are likely throughout Totonicapan, Dec. 9, with associated business disruptions. Heightened security near the roadblock sites are likely, with the possibility of clashes between demonstrators and police.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock if you encounter one; wait for activists to end the protest or police to reopen the roads. Allow additional time to reach your destination, if operating in or around Totonicapan on Dec. 9. Confirm appointments.
