Mexico: Utility company CENACE working to restore power after nationwide outages Dec. 28

National utility provider working to restore power in Mexico following nationwide outages Dec. 28. Business disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Technicians from Mexico's National Energy Control Center (Centro Nacional de Control de Energia, CENACE) are working to restore power in various cities across the country following nationwide electrical outages that occurred during the afternoon of Dec. 28. The problem was first reported at about 1430 CDT and affected most of the country, with the exception of Baja California and some parts of southern Mexico. There were also simultaneous reports of Telcel and AT&T cellular communications service outages. Although the exact cause of the disruption remains unclear, CENACE stated that a drop in generation had been detected in the national grid. According to the utility provider, technicians had restored about 94 percent of the power as of 1655.

Residual commercial and communications disruptions are possible until technicians fully restore electrical service. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and petrol stations. Significant operational disruptions are unlikely, as most businesses have alternative power supplies.

An increased security threat is possible as a result of power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Advice

Exercise caution if driving in affected areas due to possible nonfunctioning or malfunctioning traffic lights. Treat affected intersections as four-way stops. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies in case of an extended power outage. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Unplug appliances and electronic equipment to protect against surge damage when power resumes. Monitor generators while they are operating due to potential fires. Avoid downed power lines
