About 70 suspected Boko Haram militants launched an attack on Toumour township in the Diffa region during the night of Dec. 12-13, killing at least 28 people and burning over 800 homes. Local authorities estimate that about 60 percent of the township was destroyed in the assault. Toumour has been targeted by Boko Haram in the past, with the most recent incident comprising March 15 attack on a nearby Nigerien military outpost.
