Belgium: Activists clashing with police during protests in central Brussels Jan. 13

Clashes have been reported during protests that are taking place in central Brussels Jan. 13. The purpose of the demonstration was to denounce the recent death of an individual in police custody. Around 400 activists initially gathered outside the police station on Rue de Brabant during the afternoon; related protests and clashes have also been reported at Place du Nord and Place Liedts. Police have reportedly resorted to the use of riot-control measures, such as water cannon, in an effort to restore order.

Authorities have deployed additional police to the protest area. Increased security measures, including movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area until the protests have concluded, possibly restricting access to Brussels-North Station. Groups of demonstrators dispersed by police could regroup to protest at other locations in the city center through the evening of Jan. 13.
