Guatemala: Magnitude-5.9 earthquake occurs off the western coast of Guatemala, Jan. 15

Event

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean, offshore of western Guatemala, at around 1010 Jan. 15. The epicenter was about 47 km (29 miles) south-southwest of Champerico and 183 km (114 miles) southwest of Guatemala City. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Strong-to-middle shaking was experienced in multiple areas of Guatemala, as well as in Salvador and in the Mexican state of Chiapas. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties. However, it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
