Activists plan to march in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Jan. 10, 1600 from Monumento al Pescador to the Monumento a la Mujer Mazatleca

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the women's rights group Pearls of the Pacific (Perlas del Pacifico) plan to hold a protest march in central Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Jan. 10. The purpose of the event is to denounce violence against women in Mexico and to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of a local woman who had been killed in the city. Demonstrators will gather at the Monumento al Pescador beginning at 1600 before marching to the Monumento a la Mujer Mazatleca.

Police will likely deploy to monitor the protest and may move to disperse the participants, given the fact that demonstrations, protests, and other public events have largely been suspended in Mexico due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related restrictions. Otherwise, the gathering will probably remain largely peaceful, although low-level confrontations cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the march route as a standard security precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Plan accordingly for localized traffic disruptions, as protesters may block roads without warning. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
