Three people dead, eight injured following explosion in central Madrid, Spain, Jan. 20. Increased security and related disruptions continue.

Emergency crews remain on the scene following a building explosion that occurred in central Madrid around 1500 Jan. 20. The incident occurred at number 98, Calle de Toledo, approximately 150 meters (492 feet) north of Puerta de Toledo. Authorities believe the incident was the result of a gas explosion. At least three people have died and a further eight injured as a result of the explosion.

Authorities have implemented a security cordon around the incident site to facilitate the emergency response. Roads in the surrounding area are closed to traffic and pedestrians; local residences have been evacuated and individuals are instructed to avoid the area. Public transport in the area is likely to be canceled or diverted, possibly affecting metro services at Puerta de Toledo. The emergency response and related security measures and movement disruptions are likely to continue into Jan. 21. Lingering disruptions are likely beyond this date as investigations into the incident and subsequent repairs take place.
