Sudan: Additional protests over increased bread price likely across Blue Nile State through at least late January

Event

Additional protests and clashes are possible across Blue Nile State, including Ed Damazin and Al-Rasir, through at least late January. Students are denouncing an increase in bread prices; authorities have suspended academic activities in Al-Rasir and Ad Damazin until further notice. In previous demonstrations, security forces used riot control tactics, including rubber bullets and tear gas, to disperse the protesters.

Demonstrations could also occur in other states, such as Gezira and North Kordofan. Security personnel will likely use force to disperse any unruly gatherings that may materialize. Clashes are possible. Localized traffic and commercial disruptions are likely near all protest sites.

Context

Rising prices, scarcity of basic supplies, and cash shortages nationwide sparked initial protests in Sudan during mid-December 2018, which evolved into anti-government demonstrations leading to the April 2019 resignation of former President Omar Al-Bashir. The transitional government has introduced a rationing system to manage the country's bread crisis. Lack of cash and bread will probably continue to impact Sudan's socio-economic conditions through 2021 negatively.
