Scores of people have been killed in violence that occurred in Geneina, the administrative capital of West Darfur State, Jan. 16-17. Some sources have reported more than 80 fatalities following an escalation of a dispute between two communities at the camp for displaced persons. Incidents were reported at the Krinding and Abu Zar camps. Armed militias reportedly attacked the location after an individual from the Rizeigat tribe was stabbed during the initial altercation. Authorities have enacted an indefinite round-the-clock curfew across West Darfur state following the violence.
Tensions are likely to persist across the state in the coming days. Further bouts of violence are possible. Additional security personnel will almost certainly remain deployed throughout the city in response to the clashes. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional security checkpoints, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions.
