Dominican Rep.: Opposition activists plan to protest in Santo Domingo Feb. 27
Activists to protest outside the National Assembly in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Feb. 27. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
Event
Opposition activists plan to protest outside the National Congress in Santo Domingo Feb. 27. The action is to demand the government approve a bill that would grant 30 percent of pension funds to workers. The rally will coincide with an address by President Luis Abidaner in Congress; however, the exact start time of the demonstration has not been confirmed.
Authorities will almost certainly tighten security around the National Congress during the protest, especially due to the presidential address. Low-level clashes between police and protesters are possible. During previous protests near Congress in late 2020, demonstrators threw rocks and damaged the property and some vehicles and police have previously deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds. Similar incidents of violence and clashes are possible Feb. 27. Localized traffic disruptions are highly likely.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time to reach destinations near the National Congress Feb. 27.
