Guatemala: Activists to protest in Guatemala City Feb. 18
Activists to march from several points in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 0700 Feb. 18. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Event
The Committee for Rural Development (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) has called for protests in multiple locations in Guatemala City from 0700 Feb. 18. The action will denounce alleged government corruption and general insecurity. Gathering points in the capital include the Obelisk, El Trebol, Metro Norte, and Calzada Roosevelt; participants will then march towards the area of Plaza de la Constitucion and Congress. Hundreds of people could join the marches.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests and secure the Congress building. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if police attempt to clear any potential roadblocks; CODECA activists commonly block roads as part of their protests. The marches are likely to cause localized traffic disruptions in several parts of Guatemala City.
Advice
Avoid all protests and leave the area at the first sign of violence. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow extra time to reach destinations across Guatemala City from the morning of Feb. 18.
