Guatemala: Increased activity reported at Pacaya Volcano, Feb. 19
Increased activity reported at Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala, Feb. 19. Ashfall occurs in nearby areas; no evacuations.
Event
The Guatemalan Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (Insivumeh) has reported elevated volcanic activity at the Pacaya Volcano; the mountain is located approximately 25 km (16 miles) south-southwest of Guatemala City. The eruptive events took place the morning of Feb. 19. Observations indicate that there are lava flows in the volcano's northeast and ashfall has flown as far as 8 km (5 miles) towards the south of the volcano, affecting several towns in the Escuintla, Guatemala, and Santa Rosa departments.
Despite the increase in activity, there are currently no evacuation orders in effect; however, authorities have issued an ashfall advisory for nearby areas and urged residents to remain vigilant, in case local authorities do order an evacuation in the coming hours. The Pacaya National Park remains closed.
Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, lava flows, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area. The Pacaya Volcano may continue to emit frequent gas and ash clouds in the coming days.
Transport
Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibilities could be significantly reduced. Authorities could temporarily suspend airport operations if a significant eruption occurs.
Advice
Avoid the vicinity of the volcano. Follow official instructions. Monitor local media for updates. Confirm regional flights. Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near Pacaya Volcano. If an eruption occurs, seek updated information on road conditions before driving; due to reduced visibility, drive cautiously in areas affected by ash. Carry facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area.
