Guatemala: Taxi drivers to hold vehiclar caravan protests in Guatemala City Feb. 24
Taxi drivers to protest from several points in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 0500 Feb. 24. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Event
Taxi drivers plan to launch vehicular caravan protests from multiple locations in Guatemala City to Plaza de la Constitucion, starting at 0500 Feb. 24. The action is to demand that taxis be excluded from the mandatory insurance required for public transport vehicles. The starting points for the caravans include Calzada Roosevelt, Calzada San Juan, Hotel la Casa Grande, Centra Norte, and the Obelisk. Some demonstrators will also depart from KM 22 near Villa Nueva. The protests could draw hundreds of taxi drivers.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protests. Major violence is unlikely; however, isolated skirmishes are possible if police attempt to disperse those who block roads. As with other demonstrations with similar march routes to Plaza de la Constitucion in recent days, the marches are likely to cause localized traffic disruptions in several parts of Guatemala City.
Advice
Avoid all protests and leave the area at the first sign of violence. Heed the directives of the authorities. Allow extra time to reach destinations across Guatemala City from the morning of Feb. 24.
