Warning

Event

Protests have occurred in Saravan, Feb. 23. Demonstrators have clashed with the security forces and occupied a local governorate office. Damage to the building and at least one police vehicle have been reported. There have been no immediate reports of casualties; however, given the ongoing nature of the unrest, casualties are possible. Authorities have also reportedly disrupted internet services in the city. Several roads in the city have been closed. The unrest is in response to the killing of several ethnic Baluch fuel collectors by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Feb. 22.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the city and surrounding region until the unrest subsides. Officials could extend telecommunications disruptions to prevent protesters from organizing. Authorities could also enforce other restrictions, including curfews, road closures, and temporary closures of the shared border crossing with Pakistan. Further clashes are possible. Violence could escalate if additional casualties occur during the ongoing protests.

Saravan is located approximately 275 km (171 miles) southeast of Zahedan.
