Additional violent clashes are possible across Tripoli following a security incident involving the Minister of Interior early Feb. 21. The government official had concluded a meeting with the national oil corporation and was returning to Tripoli. Unidentified assailants attacked the government officials’ convoy as it was traveling through Janzour. The official escaped unharmed. One of the assailants was killed in the attack and at least two other individuals were arrested. The Minister of Interior is claiming the incident was an assassination attempt; however, rival militia groups attest the event quickly escalated but was reactionary and initially prompted by a traffic altercation, not premeditated.

The security incident prompted infighting and violent clashes between rival militia groups in the Ghut Shaal area. The groups engaged in heavy gunfire but have since opened dialogue and begun the peace negotiation process. The situation in the west of Tripoli is still tense and further security incidents are possible. Localized traffic and transit disruptions are likely in the area. Officials have already closed several streets, including the Third and Second Ring Roads. An increased security presence is likely until the situation is brought under control.
