Mexico: Teachers caravan protest to arrive in Mexico City Feb. 9

Unionized teachers to protest at the National Palace in Mexico City, Mexico, Feb. 9. Tight security, localized traffic disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Educators affiliated with the National Coordinating Organization for Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Education, CNTE) plan to protest outside the National Palace in Mexico City Feb. 9. The action is to demand the government pay workers salaries and bonuses owed to them. The demonstration in the capital is a culmination of a caravan protest of dozens of vehicles which was launched in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan State, Feb. 6; the caravan has since passed through several urban centers in Michoacan, reportedly with around 1,200 participants. Organizers have threatened to maintain a sit-in protest at the Zocalo, next to the National Palace, until they are received by officials.

Authorities will probably increase security around the National Palace to monitor the protest. Major violence is unlikely; however, low-level confrontations are possible if demonstrators breach security cordons around the government building or disobey police orders to disband. Localized traffic disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Heed the directives of the authorities. Plan for localized traffic disruptions in central Mexico City Feb. 9.
