Niger: Protests in Niamey Feb. 25

Violent protests through afternoon hours in Niamey, Niger, Feb. 25. Further clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Violent demonstrations have been reported in Niamey through the morning and afternoon hours of Feb. 25. In one notable incident, protesters destroyed the property of a local journalist accused of supporting president-elect Mohamed Bazoum. A large security presence remains deployed across the city, and the Niamey main market has been closed. The protests follow the Independent National Electoral Commission's declaration of Bazoum as the winner of Niger's presidential election Feb. 23.

Security forces will most likely remain deployed near national election commission facilities and locations where spontaneous demonstrations may occur in the coming days. Tensions between supporters of rival political camps are likely to persist. Further sporadic clashes are particularly possible in Niamey and other larger urban areas. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely during all demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all large gatherings due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in affected areas.
