Niger: Student groups plan demonstrations in Niamey, Feb. 9-16
Student groups plan annual demonstrations in Niamey, Niger, Feb. 9-16. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions likely.
Event
Student groups plan to stage a series of demonstrations and marches in Niamey Feb. 9-16. The purpose of the event is to mark the 31st anniversary of the deadly clashes between activists from the Union de Scolaires Nigeriens (USN) and police that took place at the Kennedy Bridge on Feb. 9, 1990. While organizers have as yet released no specific start times for the gatherings, preliminary information suggests that some of the events will consist of marches between Abou Moumouni University (formerly known as the University of Niamey) and Yantala Cemetery. Specific routes have not been announced; however, participants will almost certainly march across Kennedy Bridge during such demonstrations, as has been the case in previous years.
Heightened security operations and localized transport disruptions are likely during the demonstrations. The commemorations held in recent years have drawn large crowds although they have remained largely peaceful. Nevertheless, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional travel time Feb. 9-16 due to the potential for localized transport disruptions. Heed the advice of local security authorities.
