Sudan: Protests and increased security likely to continue in El-Fasher, North Darfur, into mid-February following deaths of two Barti farmers
Additional protests over farmers' deaths likely in El-Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan through mid-February. Curfew in place.
Event
Further protests and associated acts of violence are possible in El-Fasher, North Darfur State, into mid-February following the recent killings of two ethnic Barti farmers. The demonstrations, which began in early February to demand justice in the death of the first farmer, turned violent Feb. 8 in reaction to news of the second man's killing. Members of the Barti community responded by blocking roads and setting several buildings on fire. Security forces have deployed to the city and authorities have imposed an 1800-0600 curfew through at least mid-February in an effort to contain the protests.
Tensions will likely persist in El-Fasher over the coming days. Further bouts of violence remain possible despite the curfew. Authorities will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture until the protests abate. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional security checkpoints, are likely and will prompt localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all large public gatherings and concentrations of security personnel. Do not attempt to drive through areas where protesters are blocking roads. Leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location away from schools or government buildings if violence erupts nearby. Seek updated information from trusted local sources on road conditions before traveling in the area. Plan for public transportation and road travel delays. Heed the directives of the security forces.
