Chile: Santiago Metro workers to strike and protest March 10
Metro workers to strike in Santiago, Chile, March 10; protest planned near La Moneda station from 1000. Transport disruptions likely.
Event
The Union of Santiago Metro Professionals and Technicians, which represents around 1,800 Metro workers, has called for a strike through March 10 over the lack of dialogue with officials over various labor-related demands. Metro officials have stated that contingency measures will be implemented to ensure continued services on all lines 0600-2200; however, some metro disruptions are still possible throughout the day.
In addition to the work stoppage, striking workers will protest outside the Metro corporate offices, located at La Moneda station, from 1000. Increased security is likely near the offices during the protest. Protesters could march along La Alameda, otherwise known as Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, where the offices are located. Localized traffic disruptions are likely; clashes are possible if demonstrators are overly disruptive or attempt to vandalize property.
Advice
Confirm Metro service status before setting out, and allow additional time for travel March 10. Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location.
