China: Pro-democracy activists protest outside of West Kowloon Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong March 1
Activists could stage further protests at West Kowloon Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong, China, March 1. Increased security likely.
Event
Pro-democracy activists gathered outside the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court March 1 ahead of the hearing for 47 pro-democracy activists and lawmakers. Reports indicate that several hundred people gathered at the court before the proceedings began at 1100. Additional demonstrations are possible once the hearings conclude.
An enhanced police presence is on the scene. While the morning demonstration remained peaceful, officials could break up the gathering due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. However, officers will probably attempt to arrest protesters quickly, reducing the likelihood of running violence. Protests and the police response may prompt localized business and transport disruptions.
Officials charged the activists with conspiring to subvert state power under the imposed national security law due to a primary electoral contest they organized or participated in during July 2020. Organizers created the primary to select the strongest pro-democracy candidates ahead of the territory's delayed Legislative Council election, initially slated for September 2020.
Advice
Avoid West Kowloon Magistrates' Court and surrounding areas due to the potential for violence. Heed all security personnel instructions. If clashes break out nearby, leave the site immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near planned protests.
