Iceland: Volcanic eruption ongoing at Fagradalsfjall, southwest of Reykyavik as of early March 20 /update 2

Event

An eruption is ongoing at the Fagradalsfjall volcano about 31 km (20 miles) southwest of Reykjavik as of early March 20. There have been no reports of damage or casualties, and there are no plans for evacuation at this time. The Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management is advising the public to keep away from the eruption area and avoid travel on the Reykyanes Penninsula until further notice.

Transport
As of early March 20, flights in and out of Keflavik International Airport (KEF) have resumed; officials are advising flight operations to continue at the airlines' discretion following a brief suspension late the previous day. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) has issued an "Aviation Code Red" indicating an eruption in progress. Temporary road closures or detours are likely near the volcano. Road 427 (Suthurstrandarvegur) is closed between Hraun and Krysuvikurbjarg; according to the IMO, lava flows from the eruption are about 2.6 km (1.6 miles) from the thoroughfare. Reykjanesbraut, the main road connecting the capital region and Reykjanesbaer and KEF, is also closed. There have been no immediate reports of ashfall.
